Major Seaports of India

Moving from West to East on the coastline, the following are the major ports of India.

1. Kandla Port (Gujarat)

Kandal Port located on the Gulf of Kutch, in the Kutch District of Gujarat. The major export products are grains, salt, and textiles. The major imports are petroleum, chemicals and iron ore.

2. Mumbai Port (Mumbai)

Mumbai port is on the west coast of India on the west line of the city’s mainland. It is the largest port of India with a natural deep-water harbor. It handles cargo traffic, liquid chemicals, and petroleum products.

3. Nhava Sheva/ Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Maharashtra)

Nhava Sheva, in the Konkan region, is the king of ports in the Arabian Sea as it caters the larger part of the container and domestic cargo traffic. The major export products include textiles, carpets, boneless meat, heavy machinery, oils and chemicals. It is India’s largest container port. This port was selected for the Cruise Tourism of India.

4. Marmagao Port (Goa)

Maramagao pot is the natural harbor located in the South of Goa. It is one of the leading attractions of Goa and is one of the earliest modern ports of India. It is the leading exporter of iron ores and raw materials in India.

5. New Mangalore Port (Karnataka)

This port is located on the southern tip of Karnataka. It exports products like granite stone, manganese, coffee, cashews and imports LPG, timber, cargo containers etc.

6. Cochin Port (Kerala)

Cochin port is among the major ports in the Arabian Sea and Indian ocean routes, located o two islands, Willingdon and Vallarpadam. It is India’s largest container of transshipment facility.

7. Tuticorin Port (Tamil Nadu)

It is an artificial deep-sea harbor and the largest container terminal of India. It is an all-weather port receiving larger part of international traffic. The port is the best for Maritime trade and pearl fishery.

8. Chennai Port

Chennai port is among the largest ports of the Bay of Bengal, the hub for the cargo traffic, cars and big containers on the west coast. It is surrounded by lighthouses and has inter – port connectivity.

9. Ennore Port (Chennai)

Ennore Port is India’s first corporate port. This port is located in Chennai, meant to filter the traffic of Chennai port.

10. Paradip Port (Odisha)

It is an important part of Eastern Shore located in Odisha. Paradip is a deepwater port. It looks after the transport of dry cargoes like coal and iron ore. It has the national highway and railway system connected improving its connectivity with the country.

11. Haldia Port (West Bengal)

The Haldia port is located on the bank of Hooghly River and is also called Calcutta Port. It is the base of Indian Coast Guard and the centre for trade in Calcutta. It receives cargoes of petrochemicals, oils and chemicals.
